Eko-Konnect will leverage the proximity of sea cables, the Internet exchange and the HEI's in the Lagos area to create a metropolitan network connected to the Internet and other REN's via fibre connections.   It is expected that similar clusters of higher education and research institutes in other parts of the country like the proposed Zaria Education Metro and Ibadan Cluster will connect with Eko-Konnect in a collaborative policy framework that becomes ngREN.

The project will include three activities in parallel, establish campus networks where they don't exist, establish the Lagos node of the National REN and connect to WACREN.
