The Lagos Higher Education Connectivity Project is collaborating with the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden in a pilot to establish an NREN network operating centre and build local capacity in the technologies required to support the evolution and management of the physical network. The project will demonstrate a template for the establishment of the Nigerian network (ngREN) and WACREN member NRENs.

The pilot will initially connect University of Lagos (UNILAG), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Federal College of Education, Technical in a fibre optic ring to the Nigeria Internet Exchange point with peering with similar regional networks and a link to the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

The project will employ efficient open source alternatives in modern networking and high definition video conferencing to demonstrate lower cost options and business models for sustainability.  You can follow our progress at the Carenet-WACREN website.
